VES AUTOFOCUS: AUTOFOCUSING BIOPTIC FOR LOW VISION

November 29th, 2009 admin Posted in Vision Magnifiers 3 Comments »

The award-winning* Ocutech VES- AutoFocus is the world’s only self-focusing bioptic telescope. The VES- AutoFocus provides the most natural magnified vision possible because wherever you look, the image will be clear immediately, just like natural vision. It removes the most inconvenient parts of using a bioptic telescope- focusing, and the most fatiguing- having to hold still to keep the image clear.

Not only is it great for distance activities, the VES- AutoFocus is the first low vision aid to provide comfortable, convenient, natural magnified vision at normal near distances, to play cards, musical instruments, use the computer and many other activities. This naturally clear magnification allows the visually impaired to work much more efficiently and in a much more relaxed and comfortable posture.

* Winner of the 1999 Winston Gordon Award presented by the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.

Do I need to get an eye exam?

November 11th, 2009 admin Posted in Vision Magnifiers 1 Comment »

I have had better than 20/20 vision my entire life, but just recently when I am reading very small teeny tiny type (like on a children’s medicine bottle), I have a very hard time reading it. I went to the store and looked thru the "find your reading glass strength" window to view text but I was able to read everything thru the window clearly, so it seems that I don’t need those glasses. We don’t have vision benefits so I’d be cash for my doctor’s visit. If I don’t get glasses, can my vision worsen? Right now I can use a little magnifier if I really need to read tiny text.

No your vision can’t get worse by not wearing glasses. The only problem is (as you noticed)…you can’t read as well and might feel eye-fatigue/get headaches after prolonged reading.

My dad has 20/15 vision (for seeing far away) but still requires reading glasses so being far-sided (can’t see up close) has nothing to do with being near-sided (can’t see far away)…and vice versa I can read size 2 font that’s been printed out but still require glasses to see far away.

I suggest you take the medicine bottle with you to a Walgreens (or equivalent) and try on various generic, over the counter reading glasses and see which power makes it clear again. Keep in mind that these "cheap" glasses are likely to break and may not be your exact prescription. Oh FYI, lenses that correct for far-sidedness are basically magnifying glasses (convex lenses).

Why is it that some individuals assume and or equate being visually impaired with being blind?

November 7th, 2009 admin Posted in Vision Magnifiers 2 Comments »

In the Music Category, I recently asked for help with finding a CD. I explained that I am visually impaired and have difficulty searching the net.
This is a reply that was posted on Yahoo Answers:
by ‘dickn2000′:
You need a good enema!! You seem to type pretty good for someone visually impaired. I checked on Amazon and the album is not available. I also checked Napster and it’s not available there either. So, my blind friend, your plea for sympathy doesn’t do you any good. I guess you’re just SOL!!
I don’t know that ASKING for help with doing a specific task; help with doing something that one has difficulty doing for oneself is a plea for sympathy.
Sympathy won’t help me find the CD…others helping me search for it will.
Thanks to WINDOWS 98SE OS, I can click on the start menu; highlight Programs; then Accessories; then Accessibility; then highlight and click on Magnifier and use the maginfier to, you guessed it, MAGNIFY the print which HELPS me to read and proofread what I type as I type and of course other things as well.
Thankfully, the magnifier magnifies…not sympathize.
An enema, in my opinion, being good for the body, mind and spirit as well, cannot search the internet or anywhere else to help me find the CD.
I don’t know what ‘SOL’ means; I do know that ignorant means a lack of knowledge.
For those that don’t know; visually impaired means that either the sight is diminished or there is an impediment, e.g. cataract(s) to the extent that one has difficulty seeing clearly. Individuals that have a need for eyeglasses are visually impaired; they have diminished vision. Hopefully, not to the extent that others and myself are in that others and I need to use a cane when we walk to help us to not bump into things or miss steps or fall step into holes or other things in unfamiliar areas in and outdoors.
When my sight went bad, at first, I was totally blind. The only way that I can describe what being blind is, is that when I was blind I couldn’t see anything. It wasn’t dark, it wasn’t light…it was nothing.
I have always had and believe that I will always have compassion for those that are totally blind.
I will say thank you for checking Napster.
I stated in my explanation that I had already searched Amazon.
If I had not stated that I am visually impaired, most likely, the assumption would have been that I have no vision problems.
Having no vision problems, would my query be a plea for sympathy or asking for help?
To the readers of this message; I don’t need your sympahty. If you decide to assist me; please do it because you have the ability to help someone in need.

I have no experience with being blind or visually impaired, however I can say that the response to your original question had nothing to do with either. It was someone who thought that it would be funny to be an asshole at the expense of someone else. Some people just like to get their two points. Unfortunately, on yahoo, they cant weed out jerks, racists and ignoramuses! Dont take it personally, just tune them out, and hopefully someone responded with someone that would help you find the right CD. And by the way, SOL means "sh*t outta luck"…. like i said, he’s an asshole!

May I know what exactly can a partially visual disabled patient see?

November 3rd, 2009 admin Posted in Vision Magnifiers 7 Comments »

Is it shapes and shadows? Or is it just blurry vision, and can a screen magnifier improve the vision on a computer?

The amount/pattern of residual vision of a person with a visual impairment varies from oe person to another.

Assistive technologies varie–but there is a lot of stuff out there. For ccomputers, special software packages (e.g. ZoomText, JAWS) can provide screen magnification/modification and/or speech output. What is best again depends ofn the individual and should be determined by the individual working with someone trained to asses ttheir needs.

Other common systems include document scanners, intrepretive software for images (like PDF files to convert them to machine-readable text for use with speech output) and portable and desktop reading machines (CCTVs).

BTW–unless you are referring to someone otherwise ill, the visually-impaired person is not "sick"–and the use of the term is not appropriate.

PLZ HELP!My loved one has type2 diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, and I need to do something NOW!!!!?

October 27th, 2009 admin Posted in Vision Magnifiers 7 Comments »

I need meal idea’s to cook for her.

She is already lost a lot of her vision, are there anything I can do? They gave her magnifiers but say glasses won’t help!

Is this reversable?!?!?!

And regarding her depression, she says she is unhappy with the way I live my life but I tell her to focus on herself. Me going out once every other week is not reason to distress!

What controls high blood pressure?

It’s never too late to try:

As far as the meals go, I eat lots of salads. It’s hard to go wrong with lots of raw vegetables in your diet. You can help the high blood pressure with tomatoes and olive oil. Cinnamon and alpha lipoic acid help the blood glucose. Read the stuff on the links. It’s quite helpful.
